Rumors about the Seraphim Blue Diamond have been heard at various times. Reports claiming that the elusive blue diamond, has been spotted in Russia – have added a new twist to the story so far. The content of various reports seems to have followed a similar pattern. The first Nizam of Hyderabad namely Asaf Jah I, wore the Seraphim Blue Diamond in a lavish turban ornament. The Nizam would wear the ornament only on special occasions.
Most reports trace the origin of the Seraphim Blue Diamond to the famous Golconda diamond mines. A few diamond experts claim to have had a look at the blue diamond, they seem to agree with earlier reports that claimed a Golconda origin for the Seraphim Blue Diamond. It is true that a trained eye, with significant experience in inspecting diamonds, can identify a Golconda diamond visually. This however does not imply that, an official certification confirming a Golconda origin for the historic diamond is not necessary.
The Seraphim Blue Diamond remained elusive for centuries. The Golconda blue diamond, exited the Nizam’s treasury when the second Nizam handed over the diamond to the French – this in return for military support. The French quite obviously saw a high commercial value in the diamond, it is fair to believe that the piece changed many hands. The Seraphim Blue Diamond has never been put up for auction, certifications if they do exist have never been revealed.
NEED FOR CERTIFICATION
Not all diamond testing labs are equipped to certify the origin of a diamond. Reputed labs like GIA and Gubelin, are trusted names when it comes to providing origin certifications for diamonds.
Diamond connoisseurs, diamond collectors, insurance agents and even auction houses like Sotheby’s and Christie’s – prefer to have official certifications, along with a diamond. This is all the more important when it comes to legendary (claimed) diamonds, like the Seraphim Blue Diamond.
Certifications can imply more than one document, specifying the physical properties of the diamond are just one aspect. The Seraphim Blue Diamond has a fascinating story, a certification of that story would also be expected. The importance of certifying the Golconda origin cannot be underestimated. Diamonds from those mines, are highly sought after.
The story of the Seraphim Blue Diamond, the fact that it is claimed to have been worn by a Nizam and the Golconda origin – have the potential, to propel the diamond to fame and attract an exorbitant per carat price. All this would be consolidated with, certifications from a reputed diamond testing laboratory.
